Nicholas Hoekstra

Year of Study:

Second

Program Area:

Computing Science

What inspired you to choose your program?

I've always been passionate about technology, and the idea of being able to look at a problem and say "I have the tools to solve this" is such a satisfying experience. I love the idea of being able to come up with something cool or useful that I want to create and then being able to bring that idea to life.

Specific area of interest/concentration in your studies:

As I am in the midst of my second year, I haven't focused on a concentration yet, but I'm really interested in the theoretical aspect of Computing Science, specifically algorithms and cryptography.

Your career aspirations:

I want to be challenged. Being able to wake up each day to a job that provides something new and interesting is something I'd love to do for a living.

Job you want in 10 years:

To be perfectly honest, I have no idea! It sounds a bit cliche, but the journey is more important than the destination, and I just want to do my best and see where it leads me.

You have completed co-op terms with these companies:

None yet, but I'm looking forward to seeking a placement within the next few semesters.

You are involved in the following campus clubs:

In my first semester at SFU, I was lucky enough to be elected as one of the First Year Representatives of the Computing Science Student Society. Being involved with the Society has been a great experience; it's a lot of fun and you meet a ton of cool people. Currently I hold the position of Vice-President, in which I basically chair meetings and deal with a variety of Society things, including communications and promotion. I'd definitely recommend coming to our meetings and events!

Volunteer placements at school:

Most recently, I have volunteered in the Applied Science section at SFU's Open House 2012. It was a great experience being able to help show SFU to the community.

Advice for new students: Academics are important but don't let that be your only priority. There are so many unique experiences available to you at SFU, so take every opportunity you get and don't let yourself come out with nothing more than a piece of paper called a degree. Whether it be a club, Department Student Union, or volunteering, find something to get involved in that you enjoy and you will find school a lot more worthwhile and fun.
