Joint Major/Honors with Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (Bioinformatics)

Do you want a cutting-edge and flexible career that can have a direct and positive impact on people’s lives?

Want to combine your love of biology and chemistry with your interest in computers and technology? Have you ever heard of the Human Genome project and wanted to be a part of it?

Computational methods are transforming biological research. Gene sequencing, protein visualization and interaction, and the study of evolution are only a few of the potential applications of Computing Science to Biology. Understanding gained in these areas are leading to advances in the detection of illnesses like cancer and Alzheimer’s as well as the development of new more targeted medications and vaccines with fewer side effects.

This joint program, offered by the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and the School of Computing Science, will provide you with a solid background in all the essential areas of both disciplines, including: general and organic chemistry, cellular and molecular biology, bioinformatics, information systems management, databases, operating systems, with options for graphics, computational modeling and more.

This program is geared for students who want a high-caliber, broad-based education that allows them to keep their options open to the many career opportunities available in the computing and life sciences fields.

In addition, our students can take advantage of our co-operative education program which allows students to gain valuable, career-related, paid work experience. Over 85% of our co-op students find work with one of their previous co-op employers after graduation.

With access to a wide variety of potential employers, ranging from cancer research labs and pharmaceutical corporations to biotechnology companies as well as research positions in both public and private health agencies, our bioinformatics graduates are well prepared for life-long learning in this dynamic and evolving discipline.
