Biomedical Engineering (honours only)
Option Overview
Biomedical Engineering (BME) is concerned with a wide range of engineering problems encountered in medical and surgical treatment, in the interactions of people and machines in a variety of environments, in human disabilities, assistive devices and systems in medical instrumentation, and in the understanding of biomechanics and neurophysiology. It is expected to be the fasted growing sector in the next 10 years.
The Biomedical Engineering Option at the School of Engineering Science at SFU is highly interdisciplinary. It provides a solid background in Engineering combined with biomedical-related coursework in areas such as Biomedical Engineering, Kinesiology, Chemistry and Biology. Because of the complexity, depth and breadth, BME option is offered only as an honors option.
The honors requirements include that the student 1) maintain a 3.0 GPA, and 2) complete a B.A.Sc. thesis in the senior year. The B.A.Sc. thesis is a signal to future employers that the student is able to work independently on a problem of reasonably large scope and identify and implement a good solution. Finding a thesis topic is not hard; the proposed solution need not be original and, in fact, the implementation may be an adaptation of published or existing work to the particular problem at hand. The thesis work is done in conjunction with a Professor in the school. The thesis document is typically between 50–60 pages long and the technical work usually takes 2-3 months once the topic is defined.
