Engineering Physics (honours only)

The Engineering Physics option offers a unique blend of strong fundamentals in science, mathematics, engineering design and practice, and computing skills - but especially Physics. This demanding program was set up to build on the strengths of the School of Engineering Science and the Physics Department and focuses on optics, opto-electronics, advanced semiconductor devices and microelectronics.

The emphasis in this option is on Engineering and Physics fundamentals and their applications. Concepts and ideas, a strong academic foundation for advanced education, and opportunities for career growth, mobility and flexibility. The ENPH goals are to:

  • Provide graduates with a sufficient background in both electronic engineering and physics that is compatible with the requirements of prospective employers, particularly in the areas of research and development where engineering and physics overlap
  • Ensure that students are equipped with fundamental and applied knowledge relevant to engineering principles and practice
  • Emphasize ideas and concepts
  • Enable graduates to pursue graduate studies in either discipline. Our graduates have gone on to further studies at Stanford University, The University of Toronto, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and SFU

Typical careers are:

  • Applied researcher
  • R&D Engineer in the area of semi-conductor devices and opto-electronics
  • Microelectronics engineer
  • Technical support engineer
