CMNS 205 - Change of Title and Description

Component Current Proposed
Title
Introduction to Interpersonal Communication
Introduction to Interpersonal/Nonverbal Communication
Description

An introduction to the study of interpersonal communication with emphasis on the ways in which relationships are circumscribed by the technological environment.

An examination of the interpersonal dimension of nonverbal communication. Topics include body language, facial expressions, gestures, and acoustics. Consideration will also be given to how nonverbal communication operates through the mass media.

Rationale

CMNS 205 is a course which was taught by a retired faculty member (Pat Hindley) until 1995, and then sessional instructors until 1999. This minor title and calendar description revision comes from Prof. Paul Heyer, who would like to begin teaching it in 2001.

CMNS 210 - Change of Title, Description and Prerequisites

Component Current Proposed
Title
History of Communication
Media History
Description

An assessment of the social implications of developments in information technology from prehistory to the beginning of the 20th century. Topics include: the origins of symbolic representation; the nature of language in preliterate society; the significance of different systems of writing and numeration; the consequences of print; and the initial changes brought about by electronic media. The general orientation will be towards exploring the relationship between technological and social change, and the cultural and psychological dimensions of literacy.

An assessment of the social implications of developments in information technology from prehistory to the middle of the 20th century. Topics include: the origins of symbolic representation; the oral tradition; the significance of different systems of writing and numeration; the consequences of print; and the initial changes brought about by electronic media.

Prerequisites

Recommended: CMNS 110 or introductory course in social science theory.

Prerequisite: CMNS 110.

Rationale

CMNS 210 is a course taught by Prof. Paul Heyer. These minor changes to title and calendar description reflect how the course has been taught in recent semesters, and will continue to be taught in coming years. The title change conforms to general views about teaching communication history. The prerequisite change conforms to our overall undergraduate program in that CMNS 110 or 130 are required for nearly all of our 200-level courses, to ensure that students taking the 200-levels have sufficient background knowledge of CMNS.

Rationale

The changes to CMNS 221 and 224 ensure that students taking these courses have sufficient background knowledge of CMNS, bringing them in line with the overall prerequisite structure of 200-level CMNS courses.

CMNS 226 adds CMNS 221 as an alternative prerequisite to CMNS 220 to give students a choice of the area of media they can focus on for this video production course. Instructor's permission required conforms to the way we have been applying this course's prerequisites in the past, when it was offered as special topics (CMNS 286).

Add CMNS 205 as a prerequisite for CMNS 304, so that students have studied appropriate interpersonal Communication issues.

Add CMNS 260, 261, 362 or 363 to the prerequisite list so that students have studied appropriate research methodology prior to taking CMNS 320, 323, 335, 342, 347, 353, 422, 425, 426, 435, 447, 453, 454.

Add CMNS 220, 221, 226 and 230 to the prerequisite list for CMNS 323 to ensure students have the appropriate background in media studies.

Add CMNS 253 to the prerequisite list for CMNS 333 to ensure that students have learned about new information technologies.

Add "at least 60 credit hours" as a prerequisite for CMNS 363 to ensure that students have reached 3rd year status prior to taking this research methods course.

Lowering credit hour prerequisite for CMNS 371 from 75 to 60, to make prerequisites consistent with school practice, and with the prerequisites of other CMNS publishing courses, e.g., CMNS 372 and 375.

Prerequisite change for CMNS 386 brings it into line with our other upper level special topics courses (e.g., CMNS 486 and 487); all 3 courses will now have the same prerequisite.

CMNS 425: Option of CMNS 221 or 223; option of CMNS 321 or 323 to bring prerequisites into line with school practice.

Add CMNS 226 to the prerequisite list for CMNS 426 to ensure that students have the appropriate digital video skills.

To make 400-levels consistent with 75 credit hours required, INCLUDING, other lower level CMNS courses for 435, 444, 447, 453, 454, 456, 472, 473, 474.
