School of Communication Program Revisions: 2000-2001

Bill Richards, Undergraduate Curriculum Committee Chair, School of Communication

Robert D. Cameron, Associate Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences

September 28, 1999

The following changes are proposed for the School of Communication calendar entry.

1. Streams

The Fields of Study section of the Communication calendar entry is reorganized to focus on a smaller number of streams, as follows.
Current Proposed

The school is interdisciplinary in its approach. It offers a concentrated program of study in a variety of fields. Course progressions in each of the topic fields are listed below for the guidance of students, but students are encouraged to take courses from more than one field of study in the School of Communication.

Fields of Study

Acoustic and electroacoustic communication (CMNS 258, 259, 358, 359)

The School is interdisciplinary in its approach. It offers a concentrated program of study in a variety of loosely-structured streams. Courses in each of the streams are listed below for the guidance of students, but students are encouraged to take courses from more than one stream in the School of Communication.

Streams
Applied Media Studies
(CMNS 200, 226, 247, 258, 320, 326, 342, 345, 347, 358, 363, 375, 408, 425, 426, 428, 431, 446, 447, 456, 458, 473)

International Communication
(210, 240, 247, 253, 342, 345, 347, 353, 362, 408, 425, 444, 446, 447, 448, 453, 454, 456, 458)
Political Economy
(CMNS 235, 240, 333, 334, 335, 342, 345, 353, 362, 422, 433, 435, 436, 438, 444, 446, 448, 453, 454, 458)

Rationale

This reorganization reduces the current 14 ``fields of study'' to 6 basic streams. Each stream is intended to be a cohesive set of courses to guide the construction of a degree program.

2. Continuation Requirements

The following paragraph is deleted from the Enrollment Limitations section.

To remain in good standing in a program in communication, a student will be expected to maintain the minimum CGPA of 2.25.

Rationale

Continuation requirements sections will be included within individual program descriptions. This increases clarity and allows different programs to have appropriately different requirements (e.g., honours vs. major programs).

3. Major Program

The following changes in program requirements are proposed for the CMNS major program.
Current Proposed

Entry Requirements

Admission to the School of Communication is highly competitive.

Entry to the communication major program is possible via direct admission from high school, via college or university transfer or via internal transfer if admitted to another department or program at Simon Fraser University.

In the fall of 1998, entry to the School of Communication was offered to applicants who had secondary school averages of 85% and better, and to college or university transfer applicants who had grade point averages of B or better.

Internal transfer students must have a minimum cumulative GPA at SFU of 2.25, and have completed (with a grade of C- or higher) CMNS 110 and 130, and four CMNS courses at the 200 level.

Graduation Requirements

Once approved for a major in communication, a student will be required to maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.25 to maintain good standing in the program (that is, to retain eligibility to continue in the program). Students must also demonstrate competence in the specialized study of communication by:

  • completion of CMNS 110 and 130
  • completion of four additional lower division courses in communication (for a total of 18 lower division credit hours in communication).
  • completion of a course in basic science or social science methods (a list of approved course offerings is available from the School of Communication).
  • completion of two courses in applied communication research, including one of CMNS 260 or 261, and one of CMNS 362 or 363.
  • completion of seven upper division (normally four credit) courses in communication. At least two of these shall be regularly scheduled 400 level offerings. Normally upper division courses may not be taken unless lower division course work has been completed, and normally 90 credit hours and the courses required in applied communication research must be taken prior to the 400 level courses.
  • Directed study and field placement courses may not be taken to meet the above mentioned requirement of seven upper division courses for a major in communication.
  • including these requirements, a major requires a minimum total of 45 upper level credit hours for the degree.
  • to meet the requirements for a degree in communication, at least 60 credit hours must be chosen from disciplines other than communication: students must include a minimum of 12 credit hours chosen from Asia-Canada, contemporary arts, English, French, general studies, history, humanities, Latin American studies, linguistics, philosophy, Spanish, or other languages
  • Students must also complete a minimum of two courses chosen from biochemistry, biological sciences, chemistry, computing science, earth sciences, engineering science, kinesiology, mathematics, physics, resource and environmental management, statistics, at least one of which must be from the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
  • Also required is one upper division course (plus lower division prerequisites, if any) chosen from archaeology, business administration, Canadian studies, criminology, economics, education, geography, political science, psychology, sociology and anthropology, women's studies.

Entry Requirements

Admission to the School of Communication is highly competitive.

Entry to the communication major program is possible via direct admission from high school, via college or university transfer or via internal transfer if admitted to another department or program at Simon Fraser University.

In the fall of 1999, entry to the School of Communication was offered to applicants who had secondary school averages of 85% and better, to college or university transfer applicants who had grade point averages of B or better, and to internal transfer applicants who had a minimum 2.25 CGPA upon completion of the lower division requirements below.

Continuation Requirement

Once approved for a major in communication, a student will be required to maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.25 to remain in good standing in the program (that is, to retain eligibility to continue in the program).

Lower Division Requirements

Students must complete the following core courses.

  • CMNS 110-3 Introduction to Communication Theory
  • CMNS 130-3 Explorations in Mass Communication
  • CMNS 260-3 Introduction to Empirical Communication Research Methods
  • CMNS 261-3 Documentary Research in Communication
  • Students must also complete nine credits of additional CMNS coursework at the 200-level (for a total of 21 lower division credit hours in Communication).

A C- or better is required in each of the required lower level CMNS courses.

In addition, students must complete a course in social science research methods, chosen from: BUEC 232-3, CRIM 220-3, EDUC 222-3, GEOG 251-3, PHIL 244-3, POL 201-3, PSYC 201-4, PSYC 210-4, SA 255-4, SA 355-4, SA 356-4, SA 358-4, STAT 101-3, STAT 301-3.

    Upper Division Requirements

Seven upper division (normally four credit) courses in communication must be completed. At least two of these shall be 400 level offerings. Directed study and field placement courses may not be used to meet this requirement.

Normally, upper division courses may not be taken unless lower division course work has been completed, and normally, 75 credit hours must be taken prior to the 400 level courses.

    External Requirements

In addition to CMNS courses, at least 60 credit hours must be chosen from disciplines other than communication. This 60 credit hours may include the course in social science research methods, identified under Lower Division Requirements, above, and must also include the following additional coursework:

    • a minimum of 12 credit hours chosen from Asia-Canada, contemporary arts, English, First Nations, French, general studies, history, humanities, Latin American studies, linguistics, philosophy, Spanish, or other languages,
    • a minimum of 6 credit hours chosen from biochemistry, biological sciences, chemistry, computing science, earth sciences, engineering science, environmental sciences, kinesiology, management and systems science, mathematics, physics, resource and environmental management, statistics, at least 3 credit hours of which must be from the Faculty of Applied Sciences (CMPT, ENSC, KIN, REM), and
    • at least 3 credit hours of upper division coursework (plus lower level prerequisites, if any) chosen from archaeology, business administration, BUEC, Canadian studies, community economic development, criminology, economics, education, geography, gerontology, political science, psychology, sociology and anthropology, women's studies.

A minimum total of 45 upper level credit hours is required for the degree. This may include the required upper level CMNS courses, any additional upper level CMNS courses taken, and any upper level courses taken to fulfill the required 60 credit hours outside CMNS.

    Rationale

The overall requirements for a major in Communication are organized and clarified in four new subsections. Placement of the continuation requirement under its own subheading serves to focus the attention of all students on this requirement, not just those nearing graduation. Similarly, the attention of first and second year students is focused on the Lower Division Requirements subsection, while the Upper Division Requirements subsection describes requirements primarily for third and fourth year students. External requirements, in addition to the specific requirements of communication, are listed under the subheading Overall Requirements.

The entry requirements are clarified by separating the academic requirement of C- in lower division CMNS courses from the enrolment limitation of 2.25.

The lower division requirements are clarified by explicitly listing the four required CMNS courses. This also involves a change to include both the research methods courses CMNS 260 and CMNS 261, to ensure that students are well-prepared with both empirical and documentary research methods. In addition, the list of external research methods courses is made explicit.

The upper division requirements are clarified by eliminating the ambiguous phrase "regularly scheduled". In addition, the expectation of 90 credit hours before 400-level courses are begun is changed to 75 hours to accurately reflect the corresponding prerequisite statements of those courses.

The external course requirements are modified to include appropriate additional departments in the appropriate categories. The requirements are placed uniformly on a credit hours basis.

    4. Minor Program

The following changes in program requirements are proposed for the CMNS minor program.
    Current Proposed

    Entry Requirements

In addition to University requirements (see Admission and Readmission for details), students must have a minimum CGPA or transfer GPA of 2.25 and have completed, with a grade of C- or higher, CMNS 110 and 130.

    Requirements

To graduate with a minor in communication, a student must have fulfilled the following.

    • completion of CMNS 110 and 130
    • completion of four upper division courses (plus lower division prerequisites, if any) in communication. Directed study and field placement courses may not be taken for credit towards the course requirements for a minor in communication.

    Entry Requirements

Acceptance into the minor program is subject to enrolment limitations. In the fall of 1999, applicants were accepted who had a minimum CGPA or transfer GPA of 2.25, upon completion of the lower division requirements.

    Lower Division Requirements

Students must earn a C- or better in each of the following courses.

  • CMNS 110-3 Introduction to Communication Theory
  • CMNS 130-3 Explorations in Mass Communication
  • Continuation Requirement

Once approved for a minor in communication, a student must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.25 to remain in good standing.

    Upper Division Requirements

Four upper division courses in communication must be completed (together with lower division prerequisites, if any). Directed study and field placement courses may not be used to meet this requirement.

    Rationale

These changes provide a more structured description of the minor program without actual changes to the requirements.

    5. Publishing Minor Program

The following changes in program requirements are proposed for the publishing minor program.
    Current Proposed

    Entry Requirements

In addition to University requirements (see Admission and Readmission), students must have a minimum CGPA or transfer GPA of 2.25 and have completed, with a grade of C- or higher, lower division requirements for the publishing minor.

Note: CMNS courses taken for credit toward the Publishing minor may not be counted as part of CMNS credit hours needed for a major or minor in communication.

    Lower Division Requirements

Four courses must be chosen from the following. No more than two courses from each discipline can be counted.

  • CMNS 110-3 Introduction to Communication Theory
  • CMNS 130-3 Explorations in Mass Communication
  • CMNS 230-3 Introduction to Communication Media

  • CMNS 478-4 Publishing Project Group
  • Entry Requirements

Acceptance into the publishing minor program is subject to enrolment limitations. In the fall of 1999, applicants were accepted who had a minimum CGPA or transfer GPA of 2.25, upon completion of the lower division requirements.

    Lower Division Requirements

Four of the following courses must be completed, each with a grade of C- or better. No more than two courses from each discipline can be counted.

  • CMNS 110-3 Introduction to Communication Theory
  • CMNS 130-3 Explorations in Mass Communication
  • CMNS 230-3 Introduction to Communication Media
  • CMNS 240-3 The Political Economy of Communication
  • ECON 101-3 The Canadian Economy
  • ECON 103-3 Principles of Microeconomics
  • ECON 105-3 Principles of Macroeconomics
  • ENGL 210-3 Advanced University Writing
  • LING 100-3 Communication and Language
  • LING 110-3 The Wonder of Words
  • LING 260-3 Language, Culture, and Society
  • Continuation Requirement

Once approved for the publishing minor program, a student must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.25 to remain in good standing.

    Upper Division Requirements

Four courses must be chosen from the following.

  • CMNS 335-4 The Newspaper Industry and Press Policy in Canada
  • CMNS 371-4 The Structure of the Book Publishing Industry in Canada
  • CMNS 372-4 The Publishing Process
  • CMNS 375-4 Magazine Publishing
  • CMNS 472-4 Books, Markets and Readers
  • CMNS 473-4 Publication Design and Print Production
  • CMNS 474-4 The Business of Publishing
  • CMNS 478-4 Publishing Project Group
  • Note: CMNS courses taken for credit toward the Publishing minor may not be counted as part of CMNS credit hours needed for a major or minor in communication.

    Rationale

These changes carry out the consistent reorganization for the publishing minor program.

    6. Extended Minor Program

The following changes in program requirements are proposed for the extended minor in CMNS.
    Current Proposed

A communication extended minor program may be part of a BA degree in the Faculty of Arts, which includes two extended minors. Consult the Faculty of Arts section for specific details about this option.

    Entry Requirements

    • completion, with a grade of C- or higher, of CMNS 110, 130 and four courses in CMNS at the 200 level. In addition, a minimum CGPA or transfer GPA of 2.25 is a prerequisite for acceptance to this program.

    Graduation Requirements

    • completion of the above-mentioned six courses, totalling 18 lower division credit hours.
    • completion of a course in basic science or social science methods (a list of approved course offerings is available from the School of Communication).
    • completion of two courses in applied communication research, including one of CMNS 260 or 261, and one of CMNS 362 or 363.
    • completion of at least four upper division courses in communication. Directed study and field placement courses may not be taken for credit towards the course requirements for an extended minor in communication.

A communication extended minor program may be part of a BA degree in the Faculty of Arts, which includes two extended minors. Consult the Faculty of Arts section for specific details about this option.

    Entry Requirements

Acceptance into the extended minor program is subject to enrolment limitations. In the fall of 1999, applicants were accepted who had a minimum CGPA or transfer GPA of 2.25, upon completion of the lower division requirements.

    Lower Division Requirements

Students must complete the following courses.

    Continuation Requirement

Once approved for an extended minor in communication, a student must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.25 to remain in good standing.

    Upper Division Requirements

Four upper division courses in communication must be completed (together with lower division prerequisites, if any). Directed study and field placement courses may not be used to meet this requirement.

    Rationale

The changes to the extended minor parallel those of the major program.

    7. Honours Program

The following changes in program requirements are proposed for honours program in CMNS.
    Current Proposed

Other admission requirements are as follows:

    • a minimum CGPA in communication courses of 3.0
    • successful completion of at least one of CMNS 260 or 261, and at least one of CMNS 362 or 363
    • completion of 75 hours of course work with a minimum CGPA of 3.0

Other admission requirements are as follows:

    • completion of 75 credit hours of course work including the lower division requirements of the CMNS major,
    • completion of at least one of CMNS 362 or 363,
    • a minimum GPA of 3.0 on all CMNS courses, and
    • a minimum CGPA of 3.0.

    Graduation Requirements

To receive an honors in communication, students must

    • meet the graduation requirements for a degree in communication
    • meet the honors graduation requirements of the University and the Faculty of Applied Sciences including at least 60 credits at the upper level
    • successfully complete an honors project (CMNS 497 and 498)
    • obtain certification by the undergraduate studies committee that the program has been satisfactorily completed.

    Graduation Requirements

To receive an honours in communication, students must

    • meet the upper division requirements of the communication major program,
    • meet the honours graduation requirements of the University and the Faculty of Applied Sciences including at least 60 credits at the upper level,
    • successfully complete an honours project (CMNS 497 and 498), and
    • obtain certification by the undergraduate studies committee that the program has been satisfactorily completed.

    Rationale

The changes clearly identify that the lower division requirements of the CMNS major must be completed prior to entry into the honours program.

By the way, as a Canadian University, we'd like to see ``honours'' spelled correctly.
