2000/2001 Calendar Changes: Kinesiology

Tony Leyland, Undergraduate Curriculum Committee Chair, Kinesiology

September 30, 1999

This document describes Kinesiology calendar changes for the year 2000/2001 calendar.

1. Change to Breadth Requirements

Under the Lower Division Requirements for Kinesiology Majors, the breadth requirement is changed as follows.
Current Proposed

A minimum of six credit hours must be selected from one or more of the following departments: Business Administration, Communication, English, Philosophy, Psychology, Political Science, or Sociology and Anthropology. (6 credit hours)

A minimum of six credit hours must be selected from the Faculty of Arts. (6 credit hours)

Rationale

Current Calendar states that a minimum of 6 credit hours must be selected from one or more of the following: Business Administration, Communications, English, Philosophy, Psychology, Political Science or Sociology and Anthropology. Students often ask for permission to count a History or Humanities or Archaeology course to satisfy this requirement. It is not clear what the rationale was for accepting some departments and not others. This calendar change simplifies things and also assures that students take some courses outside of applied sciences and science.

2. Calendar Change to Requirements for Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Kinesiology

The standard upper division core courses are now specified for the PBD program, as reflected in the following changed calendar text.
Current Proposed

Requirements

Successful completion of an approved program comprised of 30 credit hours of upper division or graduate level courses. A minimum grade point average of 2.5 is required for courses that are applied toward the diploma. Courses must be selected from an approved listing in consultation with a program advisor. Students whose first degrees did not include at least first year university math and science courses will be limited in their choice of courses to count toward the post baccalaureate diploma.

Requirements

Successful completion of an approved program comprised of 30 credit hours of upper division or graduate level courses, including the following core courses.

  • KIN 305-3 Human Physiology I
  • KIN 306-3 Human Physiology II
  • KIN 326-3 Functional Anatomy
  • KIN 407-3 Human Physiology Laboratory
  • STAT 301-3 Statistics for the Life Sciences
  • A minimum grade point average of 2.5 is required for courses that are applied toward the diploma. Courses must be selected from an approved listing in consultation with a program advisor. Students whose first degrees did not include at least first year university math and science courses will be limited in their choice of courses to count toward the post baccalaureate diploma.

    Rationale

Currently, a PBD requires 30 credit hours of upper division Kinesiology courses. Students can complete a PBD in Kinesiology without taking any of the core kinesiology courses. The School of Kinesiology feels that students with this PBD should have similar knowledge to our graduates.

    3. Teaching Certification

The following text should be inserted in the Kinesiology calendar entry at the end of the Programs subsection.

    Teaching Certification

Kinesiology students with an appropriate selection of courses can apply to the British Columbia College of Teachers (BCCT) to have their degree accepted for professional certification. BCCT will review each application on an individual basis. Please contact the School of Kinesiology for more information.

    4. Credit Hour Change: KIN 326

The credit hours for KIN 326-3 Functional Anatomy are increased by one (giving KIN 326-4).

    Rationale

The vector for KIN 326 is 2.0/0.0/4.0. Students attend 2 hours of lecture and 4 hours of labs.

    5. Course Prerequisite Changes

    CourseCurrent Proposed
    KIN 306
    Prerequisite: KIN 205 (formerly KIN 100), CHEM 150, 155, PHYS 102 (or 121), MATH 155 (or 152).
    Prerequisite: KIN 201, 205, CHEM 150, 155, PHYS 102 (or 121), MATH 155 (or 152).
    KIN 430
Prerequisite: BICH 221 (or 201). Students with credit in KIN 330 may not take KIN 430 for further credit.
Prerequisite: KIN 306, KIN 310 or BICH 321. Students with credit in KIN 330 may not take KIN 430 for further credit.

    Rationale

The neurology section of KIN 306 that deals with muscle and motor control can be taught more quickly and at a better level if the students have already taken muscle mechanics in KIN 201.

Exposure to at least one course in basic metabolism or physiology better prepares students for the study of human energy metabolism at the fourth year level.
