Rationale

The change to CMNS 223 brings it into line with nearly all other CMNS 200-level courses, which generally require one or both of CMNS 110 or 130.

The change to CMNS 226 reflects current practice of instructors. CMNS 220 may be done concurrently, or not at all, depending upon the student’s interests, and schedule.

The changes to CMNS 304, 323 and 347 bring them into line with nearly all other CMNS 300-level courses, generally requiring 45-60 credits, including some specific lower division courses. The changes reflect current practice of instructors in these courses.

Students in CMNS 454 have the option to do qualitative field research for their term papers. However, they are not required to do this, and a significant number choose to do the more standard term paper based on documentary research instead. We do not want access to this course limited by this requirement.

3. Change in Course Title: CMNS 447

The title for CMNS 447 should be changed as follows.
Current Proposed
Negotiation as Communication
Negotiation and Dialogue as Communication

Rationale

With the new Centre for Dialogue near Harbour Centre campus opening in 2001, the regular instructor for CMNS 447 (Bob Anderson) wishes to incorporate the importance of "dialogue" into this course content. Some classes will be held in the Centre for Dialogue.

4. Prerequisite Grade Requirement

The following text is proposed a general requirement for the grade earned in prerequisite courses, to be included immediately after the Enrolment Limitations section and immediately before the Major Program section.

Registration in any Communication course normally requires that students obtain a C- or better in each prerequisite. A minimum CGPA of 2.25 and approval as a CMNS Major, minor, or Publishing Minor is required for entry into most CMNS upper division courses.

Rationale

CMNS feels that students who get less than C- (55%) in a prerequisite course haven't learned the subject matter sufficiently to be able to take the next level of study. Numerous other departments at SFU have this same prerequisite requirement of a minimum C- grade.
