Joint Major in Film Studies and Communication

Bill Richards, Undergraduate Chair, School of Communication

December 6, 2002

The School of Communication and the School for Contemporary Arts are proposing a joint major with the following calendar description. This joint major was proposed to CMNS by Contemporary Arts, as a reflection of student demand, and instructor/faculty interest. It would utilize existing courses, and is designed similarly to other Joint Majors in CMNS. This joint major received School of Communication approval at our meeting of 16 Sept. 2002. As with our other joint majors, the main description would occur in the Contemporary Arts section of the Calendar, with a reference to it in the CMNS section.

The following proposed calendar text reflects program requirements.

Film Requirements

Lower Division: 18 credit hours in Film courses, including two of FPA 111, 136, and 137.

Up to 6 credits may be supplied by the following FPA courses in other disciplines: FPA 147, 150, 151, 163, 170, 171, 211, 289.

Upper Division: 21 credit hours in Film courses, including one of FPA 335, 337, or 436.

Up to 6 credits may be supplied by the following Art and Culture Studies courses: FPA 311, 389, 411, 412, 489.

Communication Requirements

Lower Division: 21 credit hours in Communication courses, including CMNS 110, 130, 260 and 261.

Upper Division: 24 credit hours in Communication courses, including one of CMNS 333 or 334, and one of CMNS 422, 426, 428, or 433. Neither field placement nor directed study courses may be used for the joint major.

Note #1: FPA film and video production courses have very limited enrollment; entry into the Film production program demands a commitment of at least two years, and requires application in Spring for the Fall semester.

Note #2: Only one of FPA 290-2 or CMNS 226-3 may be applied towards this Joint Major program.

Note #3: Students are responsible for meeting all prerequisites for upper level CMNS and FPA courses.
