R. Cameron, Associate Dean of Applied Sciences

May 30, 2004

The following policies and procedures are proposed for administration of the Geographic Information Science Program. These policies and procedures are written in the form of a new section for the FAS Handbook.

Geographic Information Science Program

1. The Geographic Information Science program is a joint program of the Department of Geography and the School of Computing Science administered under the Faculty of Applied Sciences.

2. Academic direction of the program is the responsibility of a coordinating committee of two faculty members each from the Departments of Geography and the School of Computing Science. One faculty member will be selected to chair the committee, alternating on a biannual basis between Computing Science and Geography. The committee chair will serve as GIS Program Director. Appointments shall be made by the Dean of Applied Sciences in consultation with the Chair of Geography, the Director of Computing Science and the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies.

3. Administration of the program is organized through the Dean of Applied Science Office in consultation with a working group of faculty and staff from Geography, Computing Science and the Dean's Office. The working group coordinates its activities through the email list gis-general (at sfu.ca).

4. By February 28 each year, the Program Director will prepare a written report of activities of the GIS Program for submission to the Dean and subsequent presentation to the Dean's Advisory Council (FAX).

5. Subject to satisfactory enrolment and reporting, the Dean of Applied Sciences will provide a $12,000 annual budget to the Program Director for student assistantships. Student assistants will carry out special projects and activities related to the Program under the direction of the Program Director. Student assistants may also be assigned to support GIS-related research activities of the Program Director, in compensation for research time lost in taking on GIS administrative duties.
