The BSc(Information Technology, TechBC) degree was approved by the SFU Senate at its meeting of July 8, 2002 as a credential to be awarded to those students who completed the Information Technology curriculum developed by the former Technical University of British Columbia. This credential was approved for those students admitted to Tech BC prior to 2002 and was subsequently extended for the 2002 cohort.
A plan for evolution of information technology curriculum was approved by Senate at its meeting of May 12, 2003, as part of a series of motions arising out of the Final Report of the SFU Surrey Long Term Planning Committee. The report recommended the subsumption of the two existing streams of the TechBC IT curriculum by the two corresponding program options within Computing Science and Engineering Science. The new School of Interactive Arts and Technology was charged with the development of a new IT program in arts and design technology, while new IT offerings in other areas were recommended to be developed and administered in partnership with the Schools of Computing Science and Engineering Science. In essence, information technology was positioned as an interdisciplinary nexus within the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
The following structure for a new degree program leading to the B.Sc. (Information Technology) is proposed in (partial) fulfillment of this plan. The program is described in terms of a new calendar entry under the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
The information technology program leading to the B.Sc. (Information Technology) degree provides an opportunity for students to combine interests in computing science, engineering science and interactive arts and technology. Students may complete the degree through the dual specialization option or through an approved information technology major (future).
Students must complete choose and complete
two of the following specializations.
Minor in Computer and Electronics Design (ENSC)
Minor in Computing Science (CMPT)
Students must also choose and complete
two of the following courses.
TECH 114-3 History and Theory of Technology and Culture
CMPT 320-3 Social Implications of a Computerized Society
ENSC 406-2 Social Responsibility and Professional Practice
Students must also complete the final year
integration project consisting of the following
courses.
TECH 400-3 Integration Project I
TECH 410-3 Integration Project II
The Minor in Computer and Electronics Design is an existing specialized minor program under the School of Engineering Science. The other two are traditional minor programs.
TECH 400-3 and TECH 410-3 are proposed new 3-credit courses that replace the INTD 401-2/402-1/403-1 and INTD 404-1/405-1/406-1 module sequences.
