Grade 12 Admission Model Proposal

Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAS)

Preamble

The admission process at Simon Fraser University admits students to a Faculty and a credential. Historically this has meant that the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Science, and Business Administration, who generally have a single credential, have had fairly simple admission requirements. The Faculty of Applied Sciences, on the other hand, has had very complex admission requirements due to the diversity of programs offered within the Faculty. If FAS continues with the current model admission promises to become more complicated over time as new programs are introduced.

This proposal simplifies admission to FAS by creating four static categories where programs that offer the same credential also share a set of common courses required for admission. New programs can easily be added into this framework in the future.

Recommendations

  1. FAS adopt a four-category model of admission as outlined above.

  2. Schools currently offering an undesignated BSc (or BA) fall into the BSc or (BA) categories as shown.

  3. Each Program within each Category may set a distinct threshold in order to meet their respective admission targets.

  4. All students who meet the TechOne requirements but who do not qualify for their first choice FAS School will be offered TechOne in addition to their alternate program (regardless of Faculty).
