From: Communication Media in Canada
To: The Cultural Industries in Canada: Global Context
Calendar Description Change
From: Provides an overview of the development of broadcasting and telecommunications systems in Canada and their relationship to contemporary society. Topics covered include the history of the CBC, cable television, the domestic film production industry, Canadian satellite development, and alternative media in Canada.
To: Explores the business structure and economics of the cultural sectors, the regulatory and policy frameworks, and their social and cultural contexts. Students are encouraged to develop, compare and contrast at least two sectors from the audio, print or visual industries. While the primary focus is on the Canadian case, students will be encouraged to look at other countries. Overriding themes explore the following: relationships between public and private sectors; independent and commercial creators; rights of creators versus distributors; specialty and general media; indigenous and global contents.
Rationale (for both changes): This course is adopting a cultural industry perspective, which enables greater comparison and contrast across the sectors presented. It furthermore broadens the definition of sectors to include new media, and, in particular, video games. The course materials are more extensively international and global in perspective. CMNS230 thereby picks up the themes begun in CMNS130, and provides a policy/political economy and institutional analysis which bridges all three of the School?s curriculum streams: media and culture; political economy and policy; and technology and society.
Does this course duplicate the content of a previously approved course to such an extent that students should not receive credit for both courses? If so, please specify.
No.
