Yesterday's FAX meeting (Faculty of Applied Sciences Executive) discussed the concept of "Applied Sciences One" - a program of first year courses that provides students with broad exposure to programs in applied sciences. This would add admission to the Faculty as a complementary admission option to the existing direct admission routes for each School. There appear to be a considerable number of high-GPA students who are interested in a year of general studies prior to making a commitment to a particular program. The goal of the proposal is to recruit good students that we might otherwise lose. For example, the Faculty of Science would prefer to admit students that are interested in programs within that Faculty rather than Applied Sciences "want-to-bes." Upon completion of Applied Sciences One, students would normally be expected to pursue admission to a major or honours program in one of the Schools. Ideally, the program will also encourage multidisciplinarity in the form major-minor combinations, as well. A first draft proposal is available for your comment as FAS UCC Paper 2002-8. http://fas.sfu.ca/ucc/Papers/2002/2002-8/2002-8.html UCC Chairs: The key issue with the proposal is to ensure that there are good routes from such a general first year program into programs in each of the Schools. In some cases, it may be necessary to add courses in the third semester (summer) in order for students to proceed into the second year. I need advice from each of you on this.
